A flexible schedule may have been one of the things that attracted you to a career in real estate, but you may actually find yourself “always on-the-clock” and frustrated. A few simple tips will help you to establish a work-life balance as a real estate agent.
Establish a Daily Routine
A consistent routine can lower the burden for memory, planning, and decision-making on regular tasks, and free up your mind and energy to focus on other things. While certain aspects of your job are based on other people’s schedules—and are therefore unpredictable—your daily office tasks should be consistent.
Create an Everyday Task List
Everything from filing documents, checking and responding to voice mails and emails to cultivating leads and engaging with potential clients on social media should be built into your daily schedule. They will be less burdensome if you keep up with these tasks on a regular basis, and you will feel less stress knowing that they are completed.
Manage Your Time
While a real estate agent must work around the schedules of clients and other associates and partners, it is essential to establish a schedule that also works for you. Be sure to schedule – and stick to it – personal and family time. Whether it is to be home for a family dinner a few nights a week, or to make it to your child’s ball game or school play – dedicate time to that which is important to you. So when you are working, you can focus on the task at hand rather than feeling guilty for missing family events.
When making your daily schedule, be sure to allow time between meetings and appointments in case of delays. Also, give yourself time to get to each appointment without feeling rushed. Doing so will ensure you arrive in a good frame of mind and are able to focus on the meeting rather than worrying about being late for the next meeting.
Establish Working Hours
While there may be times it is necessary to be on call 24/7, most of the time you should try to stick to a consistent schedule. Communicate your hours with clients and associates so that they can respect them whenever possible. If necessary, provide your private number so that in case of emergency you are available outside of those scheduled hours.
With this said, it is important to recognize that the only consistency in a real estate agent’s schedule is that it is not consistent. Your schedule will look different day-to-day, week-to-week, and month-to-month. Peak seasons may require more hours than normal, but you can reclaim some of that time during slower periods.
Get Help
Depending on how you run your real estate business, consider getting help—whether a virtual assistant or an associate to help generate business. There are a number of technologies available that can help manage your daily tasks, take calls outside of regular hours, and manage your workflow and client interactions. Take advantage of them in order to stay efficient in how you use your time.
Be Realistic
It can take time to get your real estate business up and running, so be realistic about your earning potential particularly when first starting out. Setting your goals and expectations too high at the beginning can leave you feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and burned out.
Don’t Forget Self-Care
You should also create a routine around your self-care. Focus on getting three meals per day, schedule time for exercise, and maintain a regular sleep schedule to help you feel better physically and mentally.
A career as a real estate agent can be very rewarding and provide a good work-life balance, as long as you make the effort to manage both. Stick to some of these tips for work-life balance as a realtor, and you really can have the best of both worlds.
